But the technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has proven to be a self-running machine with ever-growing responsibilities and impact. Artificial Intelligence has made a significant mark in the healthcare industry. A report by CB Insights states that approximately 86% of healthcare provider organizations primarily use the Artificial Intelligence Technology to provide services. It has also been predicted that by the year 2020, the healthcare providing organizations, technology vendors, and life science companies will spend about 54 million dollars on an average on projects related to artificial intelligence. By 2026, Artificial Intelligence has the potential to create annual savings of 150 billion dollars in the United States healthcare economy. Artificial Intelligence in the healthcare industry is not only tools or algorithms which assist or complements a human but has the potential to elevate and extend the capabilities of humans.

What is Artificial Intelligence? Artificial Intelligence in the Healthcare Industry is the use of software, algorithms, along with human intelligence for the analysis of complex medical data. Artificial Intelligence helps in getting appropriate conclusions, analyze treatment techniques, record patient outcomes, and develop and apply diagnostic practices without direct human input.

During the past century, there has been a significant increase in the healthcare related Artificial Intelligence Applications. The computing power has seen improvements which have ultimately led to a faster data collection and data processing. Genomic sequences database has also seen outstanding growth in the past half-century. The volume and availability of health-related data have increased and access to this data has been made much easier. There has been a widespread increase in the implementation of electronic health record system. Along with this, a major achievement is the enhancement of precision in a robot-assisted surgery. Machines are being enabled to replicate human processes by the implementation of computer vision and natural language processing. According to various reports, the amount of digital data being processed increased at a remarkable rate.

The future of Artificial Intelligence in the Healthcare Industry – A lot of areas and sectors of the healthcare industry have been revolutionized by the Artificial Intelligence applications. Data Creation, Data Collection, and Data Management are the first and the basic requirements of any industry. These are also one of the most obvious applications of AI. Artificial Intelligence helps in collecting, storing, tracing, and normalizing data. Google has launched its Google Deep Mind Health Project. This project has been initiated to mine the medical records data for the purpose of providing better and faster health services. Even though this project is in its initial phase, Google is working for the improvement of eye-treatment procedures. Similarly, another project has been launched by IBM Watson which is a special program for Oncologists. The aim of this program is to provide evidence-based treatment options to clinicians. The meaning and the context of the structured and the unstructured data in clinical notes in thoroughly analyzed to find any information that could be critical in selecting a treatment pathway. IBM also has another project which focuses on an algorithm called Medical Sieve. It is a long-term project with the focus on building the next generation Cognitive Assistant with capabilities such as analysis and reasoning along with a wide range of clinical knowledge. The Medical Sieve filter the irrelevant and unwanted images and highlights the disease affected regions. The online consultation is also a project on the minds of various healthcare organizations. Artificial Intelligence also has a huge impact on the genetics and genomics projects as well. Deep Genomics is working on a project which involves an algorithm used to identify patterns in data sets of genetic information.

The future of Artificial Intelligence seems bright if humans are able to put aside their fears and prejudices. Medical discoveries and treatment breakthroughs will become common words once the full effect of Artificial Intelligence is put to use.
